He was born as Vincent Schrotenbach in Baden bei Wien. He received training on the violin initially and switched to trumpet later. After he graduated from Maschinenbauschule for an engineering degree, he began his career as a musician. Schrotenbach moved to New York City to escape World War I, and shortened his name to Bach.
