Suzuki Study
How long does it take to be able to play in a orchestra? (violin)?

I have been playing piano for several years and am pretty proficent. i.e me and my teacher are starting to study Rachmaniov, Mozart and Beethoven Sonatas, Chopin Waltzes, etc. So I read music very well.

I have been taking violin lessons for about a year from a GREAT teacher. I have already progressed through Suzuki book 1 and most of 2.

My question is: At this rate, how long would it take me to be able to play in an orchestra? Not first chair or anything, but just to be apart of one.

Well… it really depends on the orchestra. If its a high school orchestra, or Jr. High orchestra you could probably do it now.
If its a community orchestra you should probably wait just a few years until you have gotten through books 3 & 4 (where you learn imperative technique such as shifting and chords). Most orchestras (even community ones) prefer you have a fairly developed vibrato.
Before you can do a college or professional level orchestra you would have to practice a lot longer. You need to know tons of different bow strokes (sautille, martele, detache, spaccato, ricochet, etc). You need to have a vast vocabulary of musical terms (which you may have accumulated through your study of piano), you need to know many dynamic techniques and be able to apply (contact point, pressure, bow angle, weight), be able to vary your vibrato (or cease vibrato at will), and about a hundred other things so that you can actually do what the conductor wants. Take into account that people in these orchestras have spent most of their lives playing the instrument.
Also it is impossible to tell by your description really just how good you are, some teachers teach a lot more technique in the first two Suzuki books while others just try to get their students through them and worry about the technique later once the student has gained confidence. I am not saying one method is superior to the other because different students need different things, but I am just stating a fact.
If your teacher is like mine was you are on the same track as me. My teacher made sure all my positioning, intonation, and applicable technique were perfect before allowing me to pass off a piece once I got to Happy Farmer (before then she let a few things slip). 18 months after I started lessons (almost to the day) I finished book two. So if that sounds like about the track you are on (I started when I was 8 by the way, relatively old) then you will probably be able to play at a college level in about 10 years (I know, sounds horrible) and I haven’t reached professional level (I like to think I am getting there) but I would give you a solid 15-20 for a professional orchestra.
But, again, you could do a community orchestra probably in the next 2-3 years, and a public school orchestra now!
Happy playing! Good luck

$22.09

Alfred Music Publishing is the world’s largest educational music publisher. Alfred produces educational reference pop and performance materials for teachers students professionals and hobbyists spanning every musical instrument style and difficulty level. Thoughts on the Suzuki Piano School was written in 1985 by one of the greatest exponents of the Suzuki Piano School. Kataoka went to study with Suzuki after many years of piano study and soon realized that traditional approaches to piano teaching were wasting the innate ability of younger students. She hopes that through this little book she can bring to light the unnecessary suffering encountered by students and teachers who are using the timeworn read/learn/memorize method of piano study. Some topics covered include: a charming explanation of Shinichi Suzuki s philosophies the Method itself how to play crucial points for beginners (listening tone parental assistance) and a thorough overview of Volumes 1 and 2 of the Suzuki Piano School. Her personal touches triumphs failures and enlightenment make very interesting reading. All teachers of Suzuki Piano will enjoy and benefit from reading this booklet. Even more important however is the fact that nonSuzuki piano teachers should read this and utilize some of Mrs. Kataoka s thoughts in their teaching. Suzuki parents should also be asked to read this book to assist them in their vital role in the musical education of their children. This book is full of good advice knowledge and fact.

$22.49

Alfred Music Publishing is the world’s largest educational music publisher. Alfred produces educational reference pop and performance materials for teachers students professionals and hobbyists spanning every musical instrument style and difficulty level. This booklet was written by the first American string teacher to observe and study the Suzuki Method in Japan Mr. John Kendall. Kendall s gift is in large part his ability to bring the concepts and practicalities of the Suzuki Method to the doorstep of the American private and classroom teacher in language that can be readily understood. The author takes a stab at clearing up the misconceptions sometimes applied to Suzuki among them: Teaching en masse playing with recordings and a magic formula. The booklet provides a succinct set of ten key factors in the Talent Education process: begin at an early age regular listening lessons are private parents help with practice all music is memorized note reading is introduced later all students follow the same sequence of pieces carefully selected music cooperation not competition is the motivation flexibility and freedom of movement. …some totality of understanding some vision of the basic concepts is essential for an intelligent application of the ideas. Thus John Kendall sums up his brilliant analysis of the Talent Education process always leaving the door open for the American teacher to tailor the basic philosophy to his or her unique teaching situation.
