I need a new alto sax for jazz?
I have been using some random brand student model and it is really holding me back (cant get very loud, no high F# key, not the best tone) i really need a good pro model saxophone with great tone and a dark sound that i can get loud on and still have O.K. sound. how is this sax?

I actually have a Ref 54 (standard). It’s an awesome horn in my opinion, but not quite worth $5,000 (I bought mine before Selmer raised their prices, when it was around $4000).
Interestingly enough, I got it because it had a rich, dark tone (I was confused for a tenor when I played low subtones), and I could get loud on it… REALLY loud. The altissimo is pretty good, too. The only issues some people might have with it are:
•Quite a bit more blowing resistance than other horns
•A low C gurgle (not a problem on mine, but I’ve heard about it)
•The front F key placed too high for some players.
The factory-set action is quite high, too, but can be adjusted with a trip to a local music tech.
If I had the money, I would definitely switch to a Yanagisawa, of whom I have a soprano (S-991). Their horns are perfect, with extra features to help the player and repairman, and they come in thousands of different combinations of metals and finishes to suit your tonal desires. Their 991 series is, in my opinion, the best non-custom series out on the market.
