The Ancestry of Jazz: A Musical Family History

The Ancestry of Jazz: A Musical Family History

$32.25

In 1917, the members of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band made the first jazz recordings and announced that they had invented this new music. However, since the appearance of Buddy Boldens band in 1897, jazz had regularly been performed in New Orleans dance halls. But did it just appear at that time? Did it descend from the music of jungle drums played in New Orleans Congo Square, or was the backwoods country reel its actual ancestor? Was it invented by Creole dance band musicians, by Buddy Bolden, or by white street players? In The Loudest Trumpet: Buddy Bolden and the Early History of Jazz, Daniel Hardie told the story of Buddy Boldens music, and in Exploring Early Jazz: The Origins and Evolution of the New Orleans Style he described the beginnings of the new music and its development in the thirty years before the first jazz recordings. In The Ancestry of Jazz: A Musical Family History he investigates and describes the musical families introduced to Americas English, French and Spanish colonies and their descendants, to uncover the connections between them, the musical sources from which the characteristics of Early Jazz were derived, and their influence on American popular music. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Family is an RB band formed by Prince and one of the first signed to his record label, Paisley Park Records. The band renamed themselves Fdeluxe in 2009. The bands origins started with the disintegration of The Time in 1984. Lead singer Morris Day had left the band to pursue a solo career. At this point, guitarist Jesse Johnson became the de facto band leader. Prince suggested restructuring the band with new member Paul Peterson to head the group, but Johnson opposed. However, like Day, Johnson soon left the band to pursue his own solo career. A few of The Times newer members followed Johnson to join his backing band (called Jesse Johnsons Revue). The Time had served as an outlet for Prince to release more music. Prince invited the remaining members of The Time, Jellybean Johnson, Jerome Benton, and Paul Peterson, to his home and presented them with his new project. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Jazz singing can be defined by the instrumental approach to the voice, where the singer can match the instruments in their stylistic approach to the lyrics, improvised or otherwise, or through scat singing; that is, the use of nonsensical meaningless nonmorphemic syllables to imitate the sound of instruments. The roots of jazz music were very much vocal, with field hollers and ceremonial chants, but whilst the blues maintained a strong vocal tradition, with singers such as Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith heavily influencing the progress of American popular music in general, early jazz bands only featured vocalists periodically, albeit those with a more bluesy tone of voice; one of the first Jazz recordings, the 1917 Original Dixieland Jass Band recordings featured one Sarah Martin as vocalist. Snowden Family Band

Snowden Family Band

$98.77

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Snowden Family Band was an 19th century African American musical group. The children of the Snowden family of Clinton, Knox County, Ohio, comprised the ensemble. The bands career stretched from before the American Civil War into living memory; no other African American band of their type lasted as long. The Snowdens made their living by farming. However, through their music, they integrated themselves into their predominantly white community and entertained, corresponded with, and even taught their white neighbors. A long Knox County tradition credits them with composing (or helping to compose) the famous song Dixie. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F.
