Australia Day $66.91 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Australia Day is the official national day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, the day commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788, the hoisting of the British flag there, and the proclamation of British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of Australia. Australia Day is an official public holiday in every state and territory of Australia, and is marked by the Order of Australia and Australian of the Year awards, along with an address from the Prime Minister. Although it was not known as Australia Day until over a century later, records of celebrations on 26 January date back to 1808, with Governor Lachlan Macquarie having held the first official celebration of the formation of New South Wales in 1818. In 2004, an estimated 7.5 million people attended Australia Day celebrations and functions across the country. Australia Day in Question by Schwarz, Clara [Paperback] $45.41 Every January the Australian population celebrates its national day Australia Day with breathtaking fireworks and sumptuous barbecues. However, this public holiday is accompanied by numerous protests by the indigenous community of Australia. For the majority of Indigenous Australians who have long suffered under colonial domination, Australia Day is not a day of joy, but rather a day of political and cultural struggle. Since the 19th century the Indigenous Australians the communities of Aboriginals and Torres Straight Islanders have fought hard for their equality within the Australian community. However, the process of reconciliation between Indigenous and nonindigenous Australians began only in earnest in the 1960s and the Indigenous are still at a disadvantage compared to their nonindigenous counterparts today. There is a lively debate about the pros and cons of Australia Day. Some Australians wish to change the date of Australia Day in order to advance the process of reconciliation, while the Australia Day National Committee appeals to all Australians to celebrate Australia Day and reflect on the Australian history. Internet Censorship in Australia $70.1 Internet censorship in Australia primarily refers to the proposed banning of certain Internet materials by the Australian Federal Government, through restriction of site access on all Australian Internet Service Providers. In 2008, the Australian Labor Party introduced a policy of mandatory Internet filtering for all Australians. While the policy has not yet come into force, it has generated substantial opposition, with only a few groups in support. The Labor Party does not have enough votes in the Senate to enact any legislation to support the filter, so that the filter has effectively been scuttled unless the government is able to implement the filter by other means. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) maintains a blacklist, since leaked, of websites which would form the basis for the mandatory filter. It has issued a takedown notice and threatened fines of 11,000 per day to at least one website hosted in Australia which contained a link to material on this blacklist. Winter Sport in Australia $76.47 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles While generally viewed as country more suited to summer sport (the mock Smiggin Holes 2010 Winter Olympic bid required Australias tallest mountain to be raised 1,000 feet with rubbish), several winter sports take place in Australia.Skiing in Australia began as a sport in the 19th century, probably at Kiandra in 1861. Australia receives snow in the Australian Alps and parts of Tasmania. The Australian Alps are within driving range for weekend trips for residents of Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra, while Tasmanian ski slopes are within day trip range for residents of the state. However, there are no runs long or fast enough for the downhill competition and the season is quite short, with the snow skiable for only about 3 months per year.
