Which Harmonica should I get for my brother?
Christmas time, and I’ve decided to get my brother a harmonica. He’s an avid music student, excellent guitar player, and has been able to play just about anything due to a strong knowledge of musical theory.
I’ve done some research, and I think I’ve narrowed my selection down to either a Lee Oskar Major Diatonic, or the Lee Oskar Natural Minor. I was thinking Hohner at first for the supposed better sound, but I decided Lee Oscar due to it apparantley being easier to clean as well as lasting longer.
I just don’t which Lee Oskar would better serve his needs… As well as what key (?) I should get it in.
If it helps some of the music he’d likely be playing is Weezer, Zeppelin, the Stones, the Beatles, Clapton, Dylan, etc. As well as whatever improv he comes up with.

The music you list encompasses two distinct styles of harp. The Dylan, Beatles, etc. is played in straight (first) position-the key of the harp is the same as the key of the tune. Blusier stuff like the Zeppelin, Stones, Clapton would be played in crossed (second) position-the harp is in the subdominant key. For example a song in the key of E requires an A harp. So…I suggest either two harps or choosing which style you think he’d play more and go from there. As far as the Lee Oskars-I strongly recommend Hohners instead. Virtually every name blues player in the world uses Hohner’s (although many have them customized, but that’s a whole other subject). I prefer Special 20s, as do some well known players. Most, however, use Marine Bands. Blues Harps are fine also but avoid Old Standby’s, Echos, and all the myriad other Hohner models. If you do opt to go with the Oskar anyway, get a major diatonic. The pretuned models are not for a beginner learning a new instrument. If you need any further help, feel free to contact me.
