which wood should I use to build a two-tone contemporary media/entertainment center?

I am building a custom media center. I want black trim on the corners to match the HDTV. It will have a couple glass doors, a drawer, adjustable shelves to hold various media stuff and decorations. It will have castor wheels. The size will be 38″ wide x 76″ high x 22″ deep. My floor is a red cherry color.

1-Which main wood should I use? I like the color of red cherry and mahogany.

2-Which wood should I use for the black trim to get a “black glossy” look on the corners? Or should I use black plastic?

3-Do you know any websites that have pictures of custom furniture woodwork?

I have made a couple of these. One out of mahogany plywood with solid mahogany for the trim and face frames. It turned out really nice. I can send a pic if you are interested.

To get a black ebony like finish use just about any type of wood but you will need to fill any pores if it is oak, mahogany or similar woods. I personally would probably use poplar or maple since they have a fairly tight grain.

Sand it very smooth (down to at least 320 grit) and spray paint with a good primer and then a black paint similar to Krylon or Rustoleum. You can use either flat, satin, semi-gloss or gloss finishes. I would suggest semi-gloss.

Try a few scraps to see what combination might get the exact look you want.
