harmonica, please answer, this is about my tenth time asking.?
I am thinking about buying a harmonica but i’m not sure which one. I’m a beginner. I was going to get a lee oskar ( http://www.guitarcenter.com/Lee-Oskar-Major-Diatonic-Harmonica-100322125-i1134584.gc ) but i wanted to have all the notes available so now i’m looking at a hohner ( http://www.guitarcenter.com/Hohner-270-48-Chromonica-420581-i1133647.gc ) i want the hohner because i like being able to use all the notes ( i already play guitar and piano) but it costs about $100 more than the lee oskar. please tell me what i should do. Also tell me what experiences you have with harmonicas and any other advice you have.

What you have here is not just a harmonica model question, but it comes down to a harmonica technique question also – and what kind of music you are playing, too.
Yes, if you want to have “all the notes available” then the CHROMATIC harmonica, (and the Hohner 270 is a good one) does give you the entire chromatic scale – I’d suggest buying a key of C Hohner 270 if you decide to go the chromatic route. You get the key of C just by blowing and drawing, and build your scales and play in keys by varying combinations of blow/draw and slide button in/out
- its a great instrument, but it is an entirely different beast from what most people think of as a “harmonica”. It is also fairly big and heavy (certainly won’t fit in your pocket) – chromatic harmonicas are great and if you become a serious player you should ultimately get one, but keep reading here 
Now the other harmonica is a DIATONIC harmonica, diatonic meaning that it has a scale built-in, and also some nice chords built into the lower end of the harmonica. Two things about diatonics – you CAN play entire chromatic scales on the diatonic, but it is a very advanced technique called overblowing, and very few harmonicas right out of the box can come close to that level of response right out of the box – certainly not the Lee Oskar harmonica model that you referenced.
BUT, since you already play the guitar and harmonica you must have some good musical knowledge under your belt, and you may want to get the beautiful tone and stylings that you can only get with a diatonic
- to be able to play with any songs you hear, you will ultimately have to buy all 12 keys of diatonic harmonicas, but you could definitely just start with one (recommend key of C) to get yourself familiarized with the instrument, how it works, how it sounds, etc.
If you have a harmonica holder/rack, you can play WITH your guitar or piano at the same time – and believe me, that is a lot of fun – can’t do that with the chromatics.
Regarding style: If you want to play jazz or classical, go with the chromatic. Everything else – give the diatonic a try, just pay attention to the keys involved.
If you go with a diatonic, I’d recommend the Hohner Special 20 or Big River to start with. Hope this helps you!
