What is the physical difference between a Jazz Guitar and an ordinary Electric Guitar?

While I know how ‘different’ a Jazz Guitar sounds from an ordinary Electric Guitar, I wasn’t sure if a Jazz guitar is nothing but an Ordinary Electric guitar with its sound processed in a specific style to make it sound ‘smooth’. I was wondering if there is something special about the way a Jazz Guitar’s pickup is constructed or maybe it has to do with the strings?

Jazz guitars do differ, but normally they are bigger guitars – e.g., f-holes and an actually hollow chamber. They use solid hardwoods, with normally fairly thick strings – to give them a thick sound.

Although that said, many normal/common guitars can give you a jazzy sound. Les Paul is a very famous jazz guitarist and he use’s the guitar he designed – the Gibson Les Paul Studio, which is normally used for rock music.

Normally the wood and the construction of the guitar are mostly highly prized aspects of a guitar when trying for a jazz sound. The thickness of the strings, adds to the sustain and thickness of the overall sound, and the different pickups whilst important can not pick up a sound that is not already present.
