does FireWire quality really matter?
I’m always seeing these cables packaged up saying “24K gold improves signal transfer” and all that jazz, but does it really matter? I’ve been using a 4-pin to 4-pin FireWire cable to get videos from my old camcorder to my laptop, which only has a 4-pin port. the cable is not gold-plated. am I still getting a good transfer? it’s tough to tell by just looking at the video. I got this particular FireWire cable thrown in for free when I bought the Sony Digital 8 on Ebay, which I thought really wasn’t a bad deal considering all the accessories that got included with it.
Firewire either works or it doesn’t, there’s no gradual degradation of image quality like you would get with analog. If the cable wasn’t allowing all of the data to get through or was allowing it to be corrupted, your software would soon tell you about it.
The 24K gold, jewel encrusted cables may last longer with continual pluggings and unpluggings, but don’t expect them to actually work any better than a standard vanilla cable.
