Trouble identifying a Harmonica?
Hi guys, I’ve just inherited a harmonica called “The Echo Harp”. It has 60 holes, and it’s made by Hohner and for the life of me I can’t find it anywhere on the internet to find a model number or anything to identify it with. I’ve found the brand of harmonica it is (http://www.musik-produktiv.de/img-007401031l/blasinstrumente-mundharmonikas-tremolo-mundharmonika-hohner-echo-harp-c-g-120.jpg) but my one is larger. Not just that but I’d also like to learn how to play it and I can’t get any instruction material if I don’t know what it is I’m playing!
If anyone has any idea what kind of harmonica this is, I’d love to know.

I think it was the original Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas video in which all Alvin wanted for Christmas was an ‘Echo Harmonica’.
Hohner used to insert a set of instructions with each harmonica and there was even a little book of pieces which had very basic stuff in it.
There should be numbers along the openings on the upper mouth side (blowing into it) of the organ. These numbers correspond to notes. If you blow you get one note and sucking produces another as there are metal reeds inside the instrument to allow for this. At one end of the instrument, it can be right on the end itself or on the metal covering (probably top), there should be a letter from a to g, inclusive. This indicates the key of the mouth organ. All mouth organs are transposed musically, which means if you can read music with no sharps or flats, key of C, and you know where the corresponding notes are on the organ then if the harmonica is key of G, you will have transposed the piece from C to G without having to do any work. Problem with that is if you are trying to play in a group and the folks in the band read the music in the key of G you need it transposed to key of C to play it on any of the harmonicas in your collection.
I am sorry, I cannot tell you where to find the corresponding notes on your harmonica because it has been years since I played, but if you just ‘mess’ around with it a little, you should start to get it sounding like you can make music with it and then keep adjusting your tongue to find the notes as well as your breathing.
