Trumpet Mouthpiece Experimentation?
Hello everyone, I have experimenting with some trumpet mouthpieces lately, and I’ve started using a Mello 6V. This mouthpiece is about the same size as a flugelhorn mouthpiece.
I just wanted some opinions about whether or not this mouthpiece is too large for trumpet use. thanks.
There is no right answer, it’s a matter of opinion. If you can play on the mouthpiece with no problem and get the sound you want, have enough range, and have endurance enough to play whatever you play, then it’s the right mouthpiece for you.
I am a (semi) professional trumpet player. I play on one of the largest mouthpieces available. People like to wax poetic all the time about how I won’t be able to play high notes on it because it’s too deep, that is, until I ask them to demonstrate the highest note they can play, then take out my trumpet and play higher. I play in a symphonic band, and I play in several jazz bands, and I use the same mouthpiece most of the time. Here, I feel the need to mention that range is not an indicator of how well you play, only how high you can play, so having a great range doesn’t mean you are a good player. Having good range is only part of an overall equation.
The other issue is endurance. People like to argue about endurance, however, anybody I play with can attest to the fact that I have pretty decent endurance. I play 2 and 3 hour gigs all the time, and have played a couple of 5 hour gigs. At the end of the most recent 5 hour gig, I hung around and played for about another hour.
