I just got a new bass, but no manual came with it.?

Thats the bass I got. No manual to instruct me. Sooo It has this thing on the back with a 9 volt battery in it and I dont know what it does.
Any thoughts?
And its strung DEADG, can I buy strings to make it EADGB?
Look wiseguys I know how to play it. It just has features I have never seen before and I dont know what they are.
