Concertone instrument – Cornet, trumpet?
I just bought this at a flea market for $35. I looked it up and the brand was distributed by Montgomery Ward and was Czech made.
Serial # 139 140 141
numbers on top of valve casing (almost where the buttons hit when pressed down) 139, 140, 141
Everything looks to be original, original mouthpiece. Works, all valves and slides move.
I was just wondering around what year it was made, and what it is worth (i know prob not very much tho). Isn’t there a website or something where you can look up serial # of instruments to tell the date? In general is it more valuable to leave some tarnish on instruments or to clean it all up?

I think you got a pretty good deal on the trumpet. Most Czech are nothing special but, unlike the ones from China, they play well and don’t fall apart. Czech instruments are known to be a little heavy, which is ok for student use. If it was from 1820 I would say leave the tarnish on but a used Czech trumpet’s value will not be hurt at all by cleaning it up. The numbers on the valves were just a way to keep everything together in the factory.. that isn’t really a serial number, just a way to make sure the right valve goes in the right case. This might be worth $75 to $125.
