102.2 Jazz FM $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles 102.2 Jazz FM (also known as London Jazz Radio and JFM) was a local jazz and soul music station for London run by GMG Radio. The station was based and broadcast from Castlereagh Street in London to around 15.5 million people within the broadcasting area. The station has experimented with its core playlist over its fifteen year history, incorporating smooth jazz, mainstream jazz, soul, jazz fusion, acid jazz, blues and rhythm and blues. In 1994 the station changed its name to JFM to encourage more listeners who were put off by the Jazz in the stations name. Richard Wheatly was appointed to turn around the station in 1995 when there was only three months money left to run the station. Wheatly made a number of sweeping changes to the playlist, selling a sister station and changing the name back to Jazz FM, as well as starting up a record label and spinoff business deals and opportunities which helped Jazz FM swing into the black and make a profit in 2001. 52nd Street: The Street of Jazz $23.43 Back in the thirties and forties, when New York City was the capital of the jazz worldyou could hail a cab, ask the driver to take you to The Street, and find yourself on 52nd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. Musicians, jazz lovers, college students, big businessmeneverybody knew that this was The Street that Never Slept, the Street where every night was New Years Eve, the Street that Variety editor Abel Green so aptly dubbed Americas Montmartre. Here, for the price of a drink or two, you could walk through the whole history of jazz. Hot jazz was born and raised on The Street, as were the big swing bands of the thirties and the modern cool jazz combos of the forties. Comics like Alan King and Joey Adams got their start on the Street, as did musicians like Erroll Garner, Jack Teagarden, and Coleman Hawkins. Bessie Smith performed on the Street, and so did Count Basie, Charlie Bird Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, Art Tatum, Sarah Vaughn, the Dorsey Brothers, Artie Shaw, and other jazz greats.Arnold Shaw was thereas musician, composer, PR man, and just plain listenerand he recreates for us the three swinging decades that were the history if the Street: its birth in Prohibitionera speakeasies, where musicians jammed for gin or just for the fun of it; its postRepeal blossoming as the center of the jazz universe, lined up and down on both sides with tiny, smokefilled rooms where black and white musicians played to capacity crowds; its postwar decline as the Street became a tawdy tenderloin of strip and clip joints. Author: Shaw, Arnold/ Green, Abel Series Title: Da Capo Paperback Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 388 Publication Date: 1988/04/01 Language: English Dimensions: 8.43 x 5.41 x 1.13 inches |
