Live Music in San Diego!
It’s a Friday night and all you want to do is listen to some great music without worrying about the huge concert halls. Don’t worry; San Diego is the place to be. While a large portion of the bars in San Diego have live DJs and music acts, these are a few places where the music scene is as important, or possible more important than the bar or restaurant that hosts it.
The biggest music scenes that still fit into this category are located in downtown San Diego; House of Blues, Hard Rock Hotel, and 4th& B. The House of Blues hosts some big and small name bands and often sells out shows almost immediately. The Hard Rock Hotel is in a very similar genre, but they generally host local rock bands. 4th& B is a veteran on the San Diego music scene, and was kept afloat by loyal locals after the arrival of the House of Blues and Hard Rock Hotel. With a newly renovated interior, they are rejuvenated and ready for anything.
Also in the San Diego music scene downtown, but nothing like the big guys is Dizzy’s. Owned by a local jazz musician, Dizzy’s welcomes guests of all ages to experience a lost art. With the vibe of a coffee house, their artists are far from those at open mike nights. If jazz, folk, or even bluegrass is your cup of tea, this is the place to be.
The Casbah is a small, 200-person venue where you are sure to be blown away. The music is loud, almost to the point of grunge and the place is often packed. It is just east of the airport between downtown and Hillcrest. In that same general area is Anthology, a bar/restaurant that specializes in fine cuisine and finely tuned musical acts in the jazz, blues, and Latin genre. There are occasionally comedy shows as well.
Heading up the coast, Canes can be found overlooking Mission Beach. With a youthful beach crowd, Canes hosts local bands in its large bar/restaurant. Just down the road in Pacific Beach is the Bar Pink cocktail lounge. The college age vibe mixed with a downtown club scene makes this lounge a favorite among young music fans.
