Whenever you really need a laugh, the old ironic punch lines might just not work. 5. Borat. The genius of Sacha Baron Cohen is his ability to make people think his extraordinarily bizarre characters are actually real personalities. He did it as Ali G; then, with this film, he blew a hole through the roof as Borat, man from the Eastern Bloc on the loose and out for a cultural exchange with middle America. The players are mostly unwitting participants, raising the fun level to a place most viewers have never experienced. Check out this raucous comedy on HBO in high definition.
4. The 40 Year Old Virgin. In terms of unbelievable plot lines, this film would be right up there. Anyway, the story of Steve Carrell and his as-of-yet unconsummated sex life was enough to bring the house down all over the country. Anyone who has thought of attempting to wax of an area of the body should refer to this film for a stern warning. Besides that, Seth Rogen and some other familiar faces keep the fun going. 3. Bad Santa. Terry Zwigoff crossed more than his fair share of boundaries with this modern classic starring Billy Bob Thornton. Santa is more than bad; he’s an alcoholic, womanizing safecracker who can’t do anything other than drink, fight and steal. It’s an alternative to the visions of sugar plums dancing in the heads of most come Christmastime. Tony Cox and John Ritter do their best to steal the movie, but Thornton holds his own throughout, never breaking character for a split second.
2. Anchorman. In a film that seemed to be beamed in directly from the 1970′s, this Will Ferrell vehicle succeeds on a number of levels. It captures that sleazy 70′s aura perfectly while allowing its star to be as outrageous as he ever was in his Saturday Night Live days. Has anyone in the audience ever thought that jazz flute would impress a date? Many strange thoughts pass through Ron Burgundy’s head. Check out this romp on satellite TV comedy networks.
1. Superbad. The follies of American teenagers are fertile ground for comic material, and Superbad mines just about all of the awkwardness involved to great effect.
